The other day, I saw a message in the Synchronet Programming area about some commits related to a SMB-based voting system. I wonder if it's related to that.
Yes, it's part of a new distributed voting thing I'm working on. You can turn it off at the QWK: prompt (it should be off by default), but if you're running a recent development (3.17) build and then send a REP packet to VERT, it'll get turned back on automatically.
And if you're running a recent development build (and you're using the built-in Synchronet message reader), hit 'V' now and you should be able to up-vote or down-vote this message. :-)

That sounds cool. I haven't upgraded my Synchronet binaries, so I haven't seen this in action yet. Does the latest Synchronet show the upvotes & downvotes? Also, will there be interfaces added to the JavaScript layer to submit votes & view the results?

All users (including QWKnet accounts) should have that option off by default think when I was initially working on it, it was including the VOTING.DAT fo all QWK packets and that might be what he was seeing.

If you're a recent running v3.17 development build, then when your system sends a .REP packet to VERT, it'll detect the VOTING.DAT file and turn that flag on for your QWKnet account automatically.

From what I've seen today, it's come through about 5 times. The last time was 11:25:22p MDT.
Weird. I logged into Telnet with your CASTLERO account and created a QWK pac and there was no VOTING.DAT file. I logged in via ftp with your CASTLERO account and created (and downloaded) a QWK packet and again, no VOTING.DAT file:
Viewing .ZIP: vert.qwk

Can you find this VOTING.DAT file and maybe delete it or rename it? And see it gets recreated and what the new file's date/time stamp is? This is very curious.

I've upgraded my Synchronet binaries, and I temporarily switched back to the built-in reader and upvoted this message. It doesn't seem to show voting results when viewing a message though. Is there another command key to view the voting results? Or are the results shown in a different way?
Do you have a custom message header (text/menu/msghdr.asc) or a modified text.dat? If you have a custom message header, you'll need to use the new UPVOTES, DOWNVOTES, or SCORE @-codes to display the voting results of a message. If you're not, then it should automatically use the new MsgVotes text.dat line (when there are votes) if even you don't have that line in your text.dat.
My sbbsctrl was crashing with the updated binaries, so I've reverted back for now. I'll try again with the updated binaries at some point.

Can you copy and paste the message you're seeing? Can you find the VOTING.DAT file and check it's date/time and maybe its contents? Try renaming or deleting it and see if it keeps coming back.

Um... you got a note to renew on your own BBS or on Vertrauen? I don't know how they could be connected anyway.

Ok, I understand the line in the text.dat, and I also get that I have a custom header and use the new @-codes UPVOTES, DOWNVOTES, and SCORE, I will see the results, but How do I vote on a particular message after I update the BBS to the newest 3.17 nightly build. This voting thing is awesome, and I want it.

Hit 'V' at the "Reading" prompt, then 'U' for up or 'D' for down-vote the message. Your BBS will then send the vote(s) to VERT in your next REP packet and get redistributed from there. Or at least, that's how it's *supposed* to work. :-)
The poll creation/display/voting stuff is still pending.

Yea, I know, it's awesome. I voted from your system just to try it out, and it's really cool (I hope you can still use that word these days LOL), I look forward to implementing here on Valhalla. I really like the way you header shows a special line calld MSG when someone votes on a message. I also noticed, and I may be wrong, the vote seems to follow the thread.

Votes are per-message, not per-thread. There were probably just more
than one individual message that was voted on in that thread. I some point, I'll add a way to list the votes (who voted which way).

Ok, upgraded to the new development build this morning, voting seems to work locally ok here, and if I don''t use my custom msghdr.ans/asc file, the results show up fine in the text.dat header. But if I use my custom header I've created, and have been using for years it won''t show, even after adding the following line to the header:
Positive: UPVOTES Negitive: DOWNVOTES Total: SCORE (I used the at symbol before and after each code as reqired, but left it off in this message so it would show)
Could I have missed something in the update?

I do have a custom message header. I tried putting @UPVOTES@, @DOWNVOTES@, and @SCORE@ in my header file, but Synchronet was displaying those literally rather than interpreting them. I tried updating my binaries to today's build to be sure, but it was still not interpreting those. I tried moving my custom header to Synchronet would use the default header, but it was still not displaying voting information for messages. I have updated my text.dat with the added MsgVotes line and others.
