One time, when I was down there, I stayed at the Austin Motel...which,
in its heyday, was literally, a brothel. But, they paid their taxes. :)

Admittedly, it was a nice place with the rustic architecture.

I've never been down by the College Avenue Bridge at dusk to see the
huge throng of bats come out...although on the former Missouri Pacific
Rail line (now Union Pacific), where the Texas Eagle train now runs
between Chicago and San Antonio, it goes past the bridge.

I'll be doing that when I go to Ohio next month. The Portage County
Amateur Radio Service (PCARS) Club in Ravenna, does a "cruise-in" at the
local A&W Restaurant. I have a left over flight credit that I need to
use before the end of the year.

I stayed with him the last time I went up there in 2007 for the ARRL
Great Lakes Division Convention in Cleveland.

Cool, good way to travel, especially internationally, as you get more expose TL>to day to day life - live like a local. :)

On a trip to Dallas for a square dance weekend, I volunteered to get bumped...but ended up having to spend the night in Dallas. But, my
voucher meant the roundtrip fare between Little Rock and Orlando was
only $17!!

After all the rcent crap with overbooking, etc., I don't think
Southwest does overbooking anymore.

But, it's always nice when a fellow ham puts you up, and saves you all
those shekels for lodging.

Yes, that practice did get some rather bad press recently.

But, it's always nice when a fellow ham puts you up, and saves you
all those shekels for lodging.

Indeed, and the company as well. Being an international visitor really helps in that way. :)

I mentioned it in another message...but after getting bumped coming
back to Little Rock from a trip to Dallas several years ago, a round
trip from Little Rock to Orlando cost me only $17, thanks to the

It really does. Ham radio operators are some of the most
CHEAPSKATE...er, FRUGAL...individuals you'll ever meet. But, by and
large, most of them are happy to break bread with, and even offer
lodging, to a visiting ham radio operator.
