  • Syncterm 1.0 Linux Install

    I can only get syncterm to install in curses mode, and I just don't like how it acts.

    I'm using Linux Mint, 17.3.

    I only found one site on google that even came close for instructions on installing on linux, and that was: http://blog.paradroyd.com/post/138091989521/compiling-syncterm-on-raspbianubunt umint

    I also had to install libncurses5-dev to make this work.

    Everything installed correctly I guess, and it even made a shortcut to the internet panel, but that doesn't work. The only way I can get it to work is to open a terminal window and type syncterm. It loads fine that way, but when you log into any bbs, the ansi is not right, filled with ? marks, and the screens looks dull and washed out.

    I got instructions from a friend to download version 1.0 syncterm, then cd to syncterm/src and type make. I did this, and it installed, but still only works in curses mode.

    I'm just starting out in linux, so what am I missing, or does nayone know where I can find a doc file on installing syncterm into linux the correct way. I know I'm very close, but I'm missing something, just don't know what I'm missing.

    do you mean compiling?
    if you cant compile it, use the binaries.

    Yes, but I didn't realize binaries were avail for linux. I'm new to Linux, and I'm trying to learn it.

    That most likely means when you compiled Syncterm, it was found that you had ncurses installed, and not SDL. If I remember right, you need SDL2.x for Synchronet and Syncterm, not SDL3.x - which are two different packages.

    So see if you have SDL2.x installed, and if not, install it. Then recompile Syncterm (or re-run it if you have pre-built binaries).

    Yeah, It came to me at work today. When I got home, I searched for sdl in program manager, and found it, and installed it, works like a charm. The mind just isn't as fast as it used to be... LOL

    Thanks for the reply. I'm kinda glad I figured it out on my own, even though it took 2 days. At least that tells me that the linux beast will not kill me yet.

    I believe if you take a look at Synchronet's prerequisites on the wiki, Syncterm uses a good bit of them too.

    you can try this syncterm package

    is build for debian, but maybe run at your mint.

    I got it figured out. I had to download the SDL package for linux. While I was at it, I installed all the pre requesites for installing synchronet, too care of everything. Thanks
