• Docs And More

From Daryl Stout@VERT/TBOLT to NIGHTFOX on Tue Dec 12 09:24:00 2017
I don't always hate reading documentation.. In many ways, that's only way to N>learn how to use something, and in that sense, that's why I actually like N>documentation. It can actually be useful..

I usually can figure things out, but there are some docs that I've
read that are "way over my head".

Yet, I've done a few "boners" with the setup...when shown my error, I

    TMI?

In this case, it's NOT the sexual connotation. It's just the term I
used for a glitch. Nowadays, when people here things like "size does
matter" (such as one person got a bigger thank you card than someone
else), everyone thinks of the sexual connotation.

Besides, the only reason a BBS would need Viagra is if the CPU was
    below 233 Mhz. <G>

    Tim,

Real Sysops read the docs...or at least skim them...a nice way of
    saying RTFM. :P

Exactly.. thats why it kinda ticked me off a bit when another sysop suggested K>you READ THE DOCS when it came to Falcons Honor, maybe it was just a mixupm b K>from what I got from the question is you were wondering why all the other K>Patel/Dalton games were InterBBS and Falcons Honor was'nt.. guess it's just o K>of those things,

I just had to wonder why Patel decided not to put IBBS with it...as it
    looks similar to the others.

If ANYONE in dovenet is going to read DOCS, I KNOW 1005 it will be you. maybe K>the whole thread was just a cluster fork misunderstanding.

I've been able to figure out some things without docs...like
programming a new watch for myself or my Mom. But, then it's so long
before I have to do that again (such as with the time change in spring
and fall), that I forget how to do it.

The technology is trying to cram too many features into an item...and
that's the case also with ham radio. When I got into the hobby over 26
years ago, it was so easy to program the radio, set up PL tones, etc.,
and you could understand the docs!! Now, unless you have the programming
cable and software, you'll NEVER get that thing set up!!

Yet, I've done a few "boners" with the setup...when shown my error, I felt so stupid!! :P

It happens to the best of us Daryl, Especially when setting up 100+ doors ove K>multi-platforms.

When I ran GT Power under dial-up under DOS 5.0 with DESQview, I joked
that "my BBS house doesn't have Windows, but it does have doors". <G>

    Tim,

Nostalgia, and Ham Radio is starting to make the BBS a popular thing again, I K>keep more dedicated users now than I did back in 2003.

I have a "promo" for the BBS when hams "ping me" on D-Rats...talk
    about a shameless plug!! <G>

I have some of the ham radio doors that the late Dave Perry (W0KGU,
SK) did, that I also use for other things. He did them without a fossil,
so you have to either run them under Synchronet (with its intercept I/O
comport deal), or use a workaround with DoorWay, and a generic
DORINFO1.DEF dropfile -- the doors will run ONLY with a DORINFO1.DEF dropfile...you can NOT use DOOR.SYS or any other dropfile with it.

    The ones I have are:

    1) BULLET - 26 bulletins on whatever category you choose. I have them
set up for ham radio, weather, and BBS information...including information/bulletins and glossary/terms for ham radio and weather.

    2) REGSCAN - Part 97 of the FCC Rules, as they relate to ham radio. I
have a separate textfile in ZIP format of that...and try to keep that
updated as often as possible. The most recent change was adding those 2
new bands for General, Advanced, and Extra Class licensees (I think
630 and 2200 meters), but they have to notify the UTC (this one isn't
for Universal Time Coordination) 30 days prior to using them, and you
    are limited on power output.

    3) WASPORT - Track your progress in the ARRL WAS (Worked All States) competition. There is one custom mode set up by the Sysop, and I have
that as "Internet" (i.e. VoIP). Even though VoIP doesn't count toward
WAS, it's interesting to see how many states you've worked that way.

    4) QRZDOOR - Of the doors, unless you have an older QRZ database CD,
this one is worthless. They quit issuing downloadable updates on their
website 2 years ago. I have since replaced that with the Buckmaster
Callsign CD. It's subscription based, but you get monthly updates,
instead of having to replace the entire CD every 6 months. There is a
utility called ICALL.EXE which will allow you to work it from the DOS
prompt. I also use the Doorway module (originally done by Marshall
Dudley, now done by Mike Ehlert) to make it display over Synchronet as a
    door.

    5) ARPD - If you have an older MFJ 1270C TNC2 or the equivalent 1270
series TNC's, you can use this to allow ham radio operators to access
the area packet network, courtesy of your TNC.

With the latest setup over here, though, for whatever reason, the
program thinks an on air connect is already in progress, and the door
exits. If I did it under COM0, it'd work. So, I just have it set up as a
    TNC mailbox.

But, with an apartment inspection coming soon, the magmount antenna and
coaxial cable, which reaches to the front window...and since they don't
allow any kind of cables, cords, etc. across the apartment floor during
an inspection (it's a tripping hazard), I've got it turned off at the
    present time.

The WASPORT and ARPD doors have special configuration files to allow
ham radio operators into the door, and to disallow non-hams. Note
that while BULLET and REGSCAN do NOT REQUIRE the user or Sysop to have
a ham radio license...ARPD requires at least a Technician Class license
or higher (or the equivalent) for the Sysop and users...and I've got it
set where WAS and the Buckmaster door (I did the same for QRZDOOR)
requires a Novice Class license or higher (or the equivalent) to access.

While I have an access level for ham radio operators, some confirmed
Visiting Sysops (such as you) are also hams -- so I added the H flag to
    allow access.
