From Newsgroup: alt.bbs.synchronet

Stupid question time, but I didn't see this in the FAQs or docs. How do I access my own BBS locally? I want to see what it looks like from a user's perspective, especially since I just got sbbs working. Can I access it
through the web browser on, say, localhost with some port number? Or
telnet? I don't have a dyndns configured yet. Do I need to just to view
my own system?

SBBS for Linux 3.17 (I should add that to my .sig)

Use a terminal client or a web browser and connect to your services. If your services are listening on localhost, then <scheme>://localhost should work fine (e.g. scheme is http, ftp, telnet, etc.).

Depending on what linux flavor you're running.
from the command line type ifconfig it will show your internal ip

eth0: flags=4163<UP,BROADCAST,RUNNING,MULTICAST> mtu 1500
inet-> 192.168.0.21 <-- netmask 255.255.255.0 broadcast 192.168.0.255
inet6 2601:680:c302:bb0:c5e2:2697:d9cc:f0c5 prefixlen 64 scopeid

you can use that to log in locally
note the above is just an example, use the ip from your machine.

OK, got that. Where do I go to configure sbbs to listen on localhost? I'm
not seeing anything in scfg or sbbs.ini that lets me set that. I found a services.ini in ctl but don't see anything in that file about enabling localhost. (Sorry, I'm still learning my way around this app. I haven't
done anything with BBSes since the 1990s, and that was VBBS.)

Rather than starting sbbs as a daemon I started it in a console and I'm
seeing a lot of ERROR 13s with it failing to bind various services to
their respective ports, which may be why I can't log in locally:

DM failed to recommend a terminal client, in which case I'll step on
and suggest you download a copy of SyncTERM if you don't have it
already. This is one of the best clients for accessing your BBS. It's
highly ANSI compatible and works well with Synchronet.

Just connect, as people have said, to your localhost port.

You might want to create a regular user as well as your sysop account
so you can test your access levels are correct.

You will need to solve this. It looks like you are running linux and if so only root can open ports below 1024. Almost all of them. There is a simple solution for this in the wiki..

Once you have your ports open successfully just..

telnet localhost <port>

and you can log on to your BBS from there to create your sysop account.

THANKS! That worked (the wiki article.) I'd seen it but there's so much information for a newbie to figure out, I didn't realize that was what
was affecting my board.

FYI I have to connect to my local IP address, not localhost. But I can
get in via telnet and the web server, and was able to set up the sysop
account and create a guest account.

Now to twiddle with its appearance and figure out how to join DoveNET and FidoNet. Whee! :)

OK, got that. Where do I go to configure sbbs to listen on localhost?

In ctrl/sbbs.ini:

By default, sbbs listens on *all* interfaces, so that includes localhost.

You can't bind to ports under 1024 unless you are root. There is a
workaround using the setcap command.

All on one line, use the following command, replace .debug with
.release if you built a release version.

setcap 'cap_net_bind_service=+ep'
/sbbs/src/sbbs3/gcc.linux.x64.exe.debug/sbbs

You need to do this every time you recompile sbbs.
