    You'd still have to browse for and find the link for a file to download.. Also, I'm not sure how well FTP works for uploading to a Synchronet BBS (there would be no way for the user to input a file description, for instance).

    I had an iPod Touch a long time ago, and there used to be a BBS-compatible telnet client called iSSH. It did ANSI very well. I'm not sure if it supported uploads & downloads because I didn't try that, but I know at one time there was an ANSI BBS-compatible telnet client for iOS.

    Actually, there is:
    1. There's the extended FTP command (DESC) that Synchronet supports
    2. Uploaded files with embedded descriptions (DIZ) are imported too

    Storing files on an iPad is not a straight-forward thing either.

    I have browsed the filesystem on my Android phones before - Android file storage doesn't always seem straightforward either. There are some paths that could be either mounted on internal storage or the SSD, and sometimes you have to do some work to find out the exact path you need..
