yes, you must patch the source code of the sbbs release and have the sqlite3 headers (from sqlite3-dev package) for compile it.
it's not very difficult.

I'll start taking a look at things like this once I have a working
debian
package, using the install from that to start experimenting with SBBS...
it's not very difficult.
