    ARGUS FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
    ================================

    Q: I have a question regarding Argus...
    A: Try pressing F1. It does help.:)

    Q: I start a SRIF processor with "start jfreq...". It doesn't work.
    A: START starts a separate, independent process. How can Argus find
    out that this process has finished? In fact, in your case Argus
    can only track termination of START.EXE, not JFREQ. So, Argus
    execution continues _before_ SRIF-processor has finished its
    job - JFREQ is still searching for files while Argus thinks that
    everything is ready. To fix this problem:

    - make START wait for termination of the process it started:
    START /wait /min d:\fido\jfreq....

    - run SRIF-processor without START:
    d:\fido\jfreq...

    Q: Why:

    27-Dec-1997 21:02:14 Remote has 0b of mail and 20,551b of
    files for us ~~~~~~~
    27-Dec-1997 21:02:17 Receiving 'f9374e30.sa8' (30,545b)
    ~~~~~~~
    A: This happens when T-Mail updates mail bundles during sessions.
    Q: I have several files for /XXX with hold flavor. Why Argus
    doesn't transmit them during outgoing sessions?
    A: You have to set Config/Polls/Options/Transmit Hold on outgoing
    to On.
    Q: Is there a way to make Argus wait 60 seconds after dialing,
    not 180?
    A: Add ATS7=60 in modem init string.
    Q: Where does Argus get time zone information?
    A: From internal Win32 settings. You can edit them by clicking on
    taskbar clock.
    Q: I have 'SET TZ=MSK-3MSD' in my autoexec.bat file. Does Argus
    undestand it? I have set a TXF flag. Why does it assume it's
    23-05 when it's 02-08?
    A: As any respectable Win32-based application, Argus considers it
    inappropriate to dig in autoexec.bat, system.ini, registry.dat.
    :)
    Q: I connected with Argus and saw VMP in flag list. Does Argus
    support VModem Protocol by Ray Gwinn?
    A: Not yet. As far as I understand, VModem has some quirks with
    checking VModem registration. BinkD, Telnet and ifcico are
    supported on all ports.
    Q: What can I do with this:
    12-May-97 21:23:34 Delaying '13ec004d.req'
    12-May-97 21:23:34 Remote mailer doesn`t support Delay
    File Capability - disconnecting
    A: Argus doesn't accept file requests during outgoing sessions and
    skips (non-destructive) this file. Max is planning to add Atoms
    to regulate freq processing on outgoing sessions. The problem
    exists in sessions with Bink/+ and The Brake!
    Q: I created an event, but it doesn't work.
    A: Events must be linked to lines.
    Q: I run DOS-based Maximus with: max.exe -s%b -b%B -n%n -p%C %Z
    but carrier gets lost. Maybe it starts too slow?
    A: Yes. To solve this problem try tuning your modem so that it
    would hang up not on DTR Drop but on +++ATH0. The better way
    would be using Win32-based Maximus, though some people say it's
    a bit buggy.
    To use Proboard BBS with NT, USR Sportster 28800 w. Fax (by Sean
    Rima):
    A) Drop to dos, change to the winnt\system32 directory and copy
    CONFIG.NT to PROBOARD.NT. If the fossil commands are already in
    CONFIG.NT edit them out and insert them into PROBOARD.NT
    B) From Explorer goto the BBS directory, right click on
    Proboard.EXE, Properties, Program Tab, near the bottom there is
    a WindowsNT button, click it and edit the line:
    %SystemRoot%\SYSTEM32\config.NT
    to
    %SystemRoot%\SYSTEM32\proboard.NT
    What it does is to only load the fossil when the BBS loads.
    Damien Sams and myself appear to have found a bug in this
    though. If you use a Protected exe BBS then the BBS will always
    load CONFIG.NT
    Q: What does 'Duration' (in Events) mean?
    A: This is a Duration of an event. I.e., if the event started at
    22:00 and its duration is 5 hours, the event will be active till
    3:00.
    Q: Did anybody manage to receive faxes with USR V.Evr.?
    A: Try this: (edit paths as needed)
    in Config/Externals/Doors
    Enter Door and parameters
    +FCO d:\bgfax\bgfax32.exe /fco:4 d:\bgfax h%h q /dte:%b
    in Config/Dialup/Modems/Modem Configuration/General:
    Init ATZ|AT+FCLASS=2.0|
    Answer AT+FAA=1;A!
    Dial prefix AT+FCLASS=0;DT
    Dial suffix !
    Hangup !`v~~^`!!`
    For newer Argus versions refer to history.* file!
    Q: How can I set up my outbound to transmit netmail first, then
    echomail, then fileechos?
    A: Set your post- and fileecho- processors to create .CUTs for
    netmail, .CLO for echomail, .DLO for fileechos.
    Q: I have Cisco with modem lines. Can I route FTN calls to Argus?
    A: Yes.
    user **EMSI_INQC816 nopass autoco telnet <Cisco server> 60179 /stream
    Insert "**EMSI_REQA77E" in the end of Cisco banner.
    Line tuning:
    line X
    exec-character-bits 8
    special-character-bits 8
    escape-character NONE
    telnet transparent
    A: Using Argus by telnet with USR Total Control:
    in console:
    add user **EMSI_I
    set user **EMSI_I host fido.localnet.com
    set user **EMSI_I service telnet
    Same in Netmanager, but by mouse clicking:)
    Total Control allows max. 8 chars for Username. No password
    needed.
    Q: Is there a way to automatically recompile new nodelists?
    A: Yes. Semi-automatically:). Argus will recompile the nodelist
    when it finds NODELIST.OK file in its home directory.
    Q: Is there a way to ignore all incoming calls without using
    events?
    A: Delete 'RING' in Cofig/DialupConfiguration/Modem Configuration/
    Responses.
    Q: Can I do something very special with file requests?
    A: Yes. You should use an external SRIF-processor (Allfix is a good
    example).
    Q: Do you see me?
    A: Yes.
    Q: I got a *.pkt file from my uplink, but Argus didn't start the
    post-processor with %ARCMAIL% mask.
    A: %ARCMAIL%, (as it is described in help file:) stands for
    *.mo?,*.tu?,*.we?,*.th?,*.fr?,*.sa?,*.su?. If you want your
    post-processor to start after you get arcmail OR netmail, use
    %ARCMAIL%,*.pkt.
    Q: Argus does not include 'nodelist.???' in nodelist
    configuration.
    A: You probably have several files satisfying this wildcard. It is
    recommended to use 'nodelist.%%%' instead, where % stands for
    any digit.
    Q: I have Argus, my uplink has BinkD. Can they link?
    A: You have to note that BinkD connection requires a 5D address
    (like 2:469/38.12@fidonet.org). Also, BinkD treats lower and
    upper case letters in session passwords as different characters.
    P.S. Note, that some mailers limit session passwords to 8
    characters.
    Q: I have a USR modem. Sometimes, when modem have just processed
    some commandsa and there's an incoming call, modem sends garbage
    instead of RING. Of course, Argus don't answer the call. Does
    anybodey have same problem?
    A: The problem is in mismatch of baud rates in NVRAM and current
    baud rate in your COM port. The AT prefix in modem commands is
    actually used by modem to determine the port baud rate. If you
    have no incoming calls, modem always uses the baud rate it found
    out by accepting AT commands. So, when you give an ATZ command,
    modem uses the speed it determined from your command to give you
    'OK' answer and then switches to baud rate written in it's
    NVRAM. What you get is modem and port at different baud rates.
    If you receive a 'RING' right after that, modem won't switch to
    COM port's baud rate and you'll get garbage. To fix it, set the
    port baud rate to the value you want to use and give the
    following commands:
    ATZ
    AT&W
    Q: A .BSY file was left in my outbound when the system crashed
    during a session. When restarted, Argus did not call that node
    and did not allow any incoming calls from it.
    A: There are two ways to solve this problem: a)start Argus from a
    batch file that erases *.BSY before launching Argus; b) ignore
    it.:) Argus ignores .BSY files that are more than 6 hours old.
