I was curious if anyone else out there is playing old retro games on the new Pocket Go by retromimi. I got my handheld a few months ago and have been pretty additicted to it so far. It just blows my mind that I can have thousands of games on a small handheld device that I can carry around -- especially arcade games.

This is the first thing I hear of that device. It sounds nice. NOwadays I do my retrogaming in a modern (2007) computer using emulation.

Honestly, retrogaming on a portable device is rough. Its not because of the device but because of the games themselves. I'd forgotten how hard classic games were compared to modern games and I am constantly going online to figure out what to do next. I'm currently playing Might and Magic II and that game is nearly impossible to play without some sort of walkthrough.

It is my understanding they did it on purpose for many reasons.

The first reason is that there was no computer power enough for making long games, so they made hard games instead. That way it would take you long to beat it.

The second reason is they could sell you the keys to beat a hard game in a magazine.

The original Legend of Zelda is prety much unbeatable without a couple of hints that are not included in the game at all. You need to have a friends who knws them, or get a magazine.

That makes sense. Man, some of the puzzles on these old games are so obscure too.

Well, yes, but there is a difference between a hard puzzle or level and what Legend of Zelda did.

Just for people who needs to get up to speed: In Legend of Zelda, you control a hero who walks an over world and must find the entrances to some hidden dungeons, get in and beat them. Most dungons can be found reasonabily well - there are hints spread around, or the entrances are obvious.

Some of them... Well, you had to burn a specific tree that is like every other tree in a forest full of trees, with an item that has an awful cooldown timer, with no hint whatsoever that the dungeon is under a tree you have to burn. ie. you will never find the entrance to the dungeon, and never beat the game, unless somebody tells you how to get there.

Good lord. So has anyone ever played Golgo 13 on the NES? I played this game back in the day and wanted to try it again. I went in trying to finish the game on my own with no outside help. That only lasted until stage 2, lol. This game is ridiculous hard. Its up there with Battletoads and Ghost n Goblins.

Honestly, I have no idea how anyone can finish this game without leveraging saved states. The game could take half a day to finish (just trying to figure stuff out) and theres no saved state. Also, whenever you die, you start the level over. I don't even want to get into the final boss battle. Even with saved states and online helps, I was about to give up on this battle, lol.

I don't know of Golgo. But I think that kind of difficulty was there so you had to waste a lot of time with the game, rather than for having you buy magazines.

There is people whose life is videogames. I bet somebody, somewhere, has practiced so much that he thinks Golgo is a walk in the park.

I think Rogue is one of the worst sucker punchers out there. Specially the Unix v5 version that applies a -4 penalty to armor to you. Lots of items in the game will get you hosed and there are not many reliable ways of identifying them, other than trying them and being hosed :-( Sometimes you are walking along and some trap pops up just as the same monster starts munching your head. I have heard most original devs didn't manage to finish it.
