thing was at least the OS had some level of quality to it... even Vista got relatively quick patches and service packs to fix how broken it
was.

I saw a Youtube video showing UI bits in Windows 10 that dated back to 8.1,8, 7,Vista, XP and even 2000.

I have a meme in the files area, showing various domiciles with various versions of Windows...from Windows 95 to Windows 8. Windows 95 was a small cottage, and Windows 8 was a real fancy home...not quite a mansion. Windows Vista had the house upside down. <G>

The OS is becoming less and less important with the average user that
runs almost everything from a browser. Most regular people could get
by with a cheap Chromebook.

I talked to a friend earlier today, and she said that Windows 11 is so screwed up, that she thinks folks will end up going to Linux instead.

A lot of people said that when Windows Vista hit.

The issue is that for people to make the switch, they need to be aware there are alternatives. Most
consumers out there are not informed and think everything is Windows - they don't even know Apple
uses a different OS. And those who know of the Apple ecosystem often want nothing to do with it
because of cost concerns or walled garden concerns.

It is only when they see something other than Windows running anywhere that it enters their radar
and they have a chance to decide to switch.

Oh, I lived through those days. I my co-sysop worked for AddStor, the
company that made SuperStor, a competing product. They ran into issues with Windows 3.1 both in installing Windows in an AddStor container, and running Windows inside of it.

Lo and Behold, shortly thereafter MS-DOS 6 came with "troublespace:", their own compression play.

Superstor was also included (if memory serves) with DR-DOS, another

I just bought a used, consumer-grade PC. If it won't run Windows 11 in some form, I may make a pre-emptive move to Linux.

I've heard the same thing. But, I can't help remember the big rush
for folks to get Windows 95 when it first came out...and all the bugs
that were still there.

The apps control the platform in reality. If there are no apps for something, the platform goes away. Netware, Blackberry, etc.. The apps dried up and so did the platform.

Windows apps are on the decline. Linux apps are on the incline, but in reality most apps are just web services these days. The average user doesn't need apps on their PC. Just a browser is enough. They just want to watch YouTube, check their email, play some online games, etc. The phone app market has seen the most gains of any platform.

My Aunt does this. She likes the look & feel of Apple products but has never taken the time to learn MacOS.

She had a MacBook which I helped her install Windows on, but then screen wasn't big enough. So instead of just getting a docking station or plugging a monitor into it, she went out and bought a 27" iMac. Then I get the call to come over & help put Windows on it...

I think it is more of the latter than the former nowadays.

Microsoft is making big investments in stuff that is not IT related, like railway firms and the like. I think this means they don't have ideas to fund with their own money so it is more profitable for them to fund somebody else's ideas instead.

In the early days I would have said it was a case of Microsofty trying to destroy competition, because they actually were that way. Not that they aren't a bit like that today - you are not convincing me that Secure Boot was not an experiment to see if they could lock others out of Wintel hardware - but it is less of an issue now.
