Hi everyone,

I'll catch hell for saying this but I decided to try out Windows 11 on my older but still quite functional HP Elitebook 840 G1 laptop (2.4ghz i7, 8 GB RAM, 500GB SSD) and much to both my surprise and chagrin, Windows 11 is working quite nicely on it. I am at the VA right now waiting to catch the bus home so I thought I'd try out both the laptop and the BBS from remote. Thankfully both are working great so far.

I also installed DOSBox-X and it works well with TheDraw, Meal-Master, and Turbo Pascal 7.

So far, so good.

Sounds great!

My desktop PC is too old for Windows 11 (too old CPU, no TPM etc.), so no go there. Perhaps getting a new desktop PC in late 2025 -- this one will be 11 years old then... :)

I won't give you any flack :P I run 11 on one laptop I have and it runs
well. Had no problems with it, but I did miss my taskbar. So I use "StartAllBack" which gives me back the Windows10 taskbar functionality.
Which I mainly use for True Launch Bar.

Hehe. Windows 11 is a bit nicer that Windows 10 I think, to me it feels
less advertisy.

It still occasionally prompts me to 'finish setting up my device' where
it asks me some questions I already said no to - which is kind of
annoying - if I want to use onedrive I will use it... and no i don't want
edge.

Having said that, I do have edge installed on my debian drive (I used it
once to test a site).

This gem allows you to radically change how Explorer works. Together
with Open Shell, it made W11 much easier for me to work with.

I really recommend all three software packages. The ShutUp10++ does
a lot more than it says up front and allows you to -really- tighten
down Windows' nasty habit of data leaking.

computer, and also tries to reduce privacy leaks within the capabilities of the user. The interface sucks but it
works ok.

That said, I'd rather use something Unixoid...

Those programs, especially the first two, have excellent UIs and are easy to use.

That said, I'd rather use something Unixoid...

As time goes on, I have found more of what I want to use, especially for amateur radio, is Windows-only. Nothing against *NIX but I just don't have the desire to tinker with things like I used to, especially after the heart attacks.

Truth be told, I absolutely LOVE FreeBSD. Love it. These days, ease of use (damaged hands take away a lot of the fun of computing) is more important to me.

With my skill set, I can make Windows somewhat palatable. In the case of my Elitebook, it has the Windows keys in BIOS so W11 set itself up as a registered copy of W11 Pro so I have a lot more options available to me.

It's using the best tool for what I need and for now, I hate to say, Windows is doing it.

If they just had a modern browser for ArcaOS, I'd use it instead!
