• Smart Meters

    Anyone have a "smart meter" from their utility yet? How long before we start hacking these?
    I'm an embedded contractor at the local utility and so I have some access to their staff to ask questions. 1st there's a powerful lack of knowledge about the appliances they are bolting to our homes at the mid tier. I asked how they communicated and it took a bit. I was curious if I'd have to pay for WiFi/Internet as well as the electricity.
    The Smart meters I'm told have their own internal transponders and function as a mesh network to communicate to a local pole mounted hub. I didn't get any frequency data yet, it was difficult getting what I did so far. The planners only had a very superficial understanding.

    So, anyone out there paying attention to this shift in utility tech that is handing on our homes?

    Not at my home (individually) but I work for a company that builds and operators long-term rental services for various types of tenants (student housing/co-living/etc.)

    Some of the buildings already include a solution that is metering utility costs and centrally reports them. My job was to integrate the data with the billing system to charge tenants as a part of the central system.

    I can assess vendors if you're interested as if the building is covered we have 600 of such devices + management deployed for sure, thus quality also can be easily commented if I ask the right person.

    ... Xerox Alto was the thing. Anything after we use is just a mere copy.

    I haven't been following it closely myself, but I have seen a bit of research into these devices.

    Hash Salehi has done research and presented it, you can find a video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T4rKaqjUXXs

    Hash also has github projects with his research: https://github.com/BitBangingBytes

    (unrelated rant: I had to type that URL manually, as though I'm a caveman or something, because I can not figure out how to paste with SyncTerm on a Mystic BBS lol)

    I think I just read an article on Hackaday about this topic... lemme go see;

    Yea - that was it.

    Aside from the Hackaday article, I know I've read more about this topic... I think there was a DEFCON talk @ D30 and remember a YouTube video about it. Can I pull it off again, lemme go try;

    I was wrong; it was DEFCON 2o21 - but anyway, hope those couple links are interesting to ya. :P
