So, anyone out there paying attention to this shift in utility tech

Anyone have a "smart meter" from their utility yet? How long before we start hacking these?
I'm an embedded contractor at the local utility and so I have some
access to their staff to ask questions. 1st there's a powerful lack of knowledge about the appliances they are bolting to our homes at the mid tier. I asked how they communicated and it took a bit. I was curious if I'd have to pay for WiFi/Internet as well as the electricity.
I haven't been following it closely myself, but I have seen a bit of research into these devices.
